Peak: Giewont Apartment
Seen from Zakopane, Giewont (1,894 m) looks like a knight lying on his back: Long Giewont is his body, and the three summits of Great Giewont form his chin, nose and brow. Legend says that knights sleep deep inside the mountain and will wake when Poland is in danger. The poet Adam Asnyk fixed the image in a poem in 1880, and five years earlier Giewont had appeared on the seal of Zakopane. Since 1901 a 15-metre steel cross has stood on the summit. The painter Walery Eljasz called Giewont "the king of Zakopane". From your apartment you see the king in profile, over your morning coffee.
